Students from Newlands College (Wellington) were in France with their partner school Lycée Nucera (Nice) during ANZAC Day this year. Both schools have been exchanging knowledge around The Great War since the relationship began in 2013. It was now time for the young New Zealanders to experience ANZAC on French soil, in Antibes.

A particularly moving day for all involved, where history, language and culture came front and centre as the young New Zealanders' participation at the ANZAC Day ceremony held in Antibes, was encourages and solicited.

Newlands students share their impressions of the day:

Jada: I thought the ANZAC Commemoration was amazing. It was a very respectful and well done service.

Tanisha: Our French trip was a great cultural experience that I would definitely do again. We were lucky enough to attend the ANZAC commemoration in Antibes, it was a great ceremony and experience. Hearing people from different countries attempt French was culturally inspiring.

Kelvin: I found that the ANZAC commemoration service was truly wonderful and that it was a great experience to have been there and seen how different countries celebrate ANZAC day.

Hana: It was a great honour to be able to represent both my school and country at an ANZAC day service. Everyone was very supportive of my French speaking skills. It was really nice to go to an ANZAC day service and listen to people from New Zealand and Australia. It was  interesting to talk to people from our own country and hear about their experiences in France.

Luke: It was nice to be a part of the commemoration because of raising knowledge of the war.

Laura: During our time in Nice we were able to attend an Anzac commemoration, this was really special as Anzac day is important as a New Zealander and something that we should always commemorate. I felt privileged to have the opportunity to raise the French flag during this ceremony. I will always remember my trip to France and the group I went with as it truly was an amazing experience.

Laura is invited to raise the flag at the Antibes Anzac Ceremony The group gets to share a lunch with other participants at the Anzac Ceremony in Antibes.
