In 2018 an exchange of Young Ambassadors between New Zealand and France concluded a 4-year government-to-government program in commemoration of the Great War: Shared Histories / Mémoires héritées, histoire partagée.

I am overjoyed to have received the opportunity to be part of the Young Ambassadors group of 2018. When I received the acceptance email I was thankfully home alone, which saved me from a lot of embarrassment since my reaction was very ecstatic!
Bonjour à tous, My name is Emma Hartshaw and I am a Year 12 student at Cashmere High School in Christchurch. This year I have the utmost privilege of being a Young Ambassador for the Following Family Footsteps trip for 2018.
An ambitious project led from Christchurch, whose vision is to enable students to build their language and cross cultural skills by making a connection with their own roots, and to share it with others in relation to World War One.

A week has passed since the trip, and wow! What a trip. Two weeks of amazing memories, and unforgettable experiences. For me, the trip was a highlight reel; each day full of learning, emotion, discovery and of course, our honorary mascot Guillaume Miguel Hyboud-Peron. Guillaume was our bear, was shared amongst us, bought us together and was our French guide (originally from Indonesia) who took us on the tour of a lifetime.
